How Base64 Encoder / Decoder works

Base64 represents binary bytes using a restricted set of printable characters. Developers encounter it in data URLs, email attachments, API payloads, and configuration values where raw binary content cannot be transported directly.

Encoding converts text into bytes and maps those bytes to Base64 characters. Decoding reverses that representation back to readable text when the bytes contain valid text data. Both operations run inside the browser.

Base64 is encoding, not encryption, and anyone can decode it. It also increases data size by roughly one third. Never use it to protect secrets, and verify the expected character encoding when decoded text looks corrupted.
